His most recent assignment was as Commander, Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq.

Brig. Gen. John P. Lawlor Jr. was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1987.
He has served in various positions in the Army Reserve including Assistant Chief of Staff Operations G-3/5/7, Secretary of the General Staff, Assistant Plans Officer, Policy Officer, Public Works Team Chief and Civil Affairs Planning Team Chief U.S. European Command.

Formerly an Infantryman and Special Forces Medical Sergeant, he became a Special Forces Warrant Officer in 1999 and has served as an Assistant Detachment Commander, Detachment Commander, Company Operations Warrant Officer, Battalion Operations Warrant Officer and Group Operations Warrant Officer within the 10th SFG(A). Additionally, he served as the Commandant, Special Forces Warrant Officer Institute (Airborne).
