3rd SFG (A) History

The 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) was first activated on Dec. 5, 1963 at Fort Bragg, N.C., as a Special Action Force with a Middle East and Africa orientation. Until its deactivation on Dec. 10, 1969, the Group trained armed forces personnel of the Congo, and also supported the Gemini 6 and 7 manned space launches.

Reactivated at Fort Bragg on July 1, 1990, with an African and Caribbean Basin orientation, the 3rd SFG (A) returned to the Regiment. Since that time the Group has participated in numerous combat deployments as well as major training exercises, to include:

The 3rd SFG (A) has had an essential role in building the Afghan National Security Forces since 2003. The Group was the first unit called upon to start the development of the Afghan National Army. From 2003 to the present, the 3rd SFG(A) has assisted in developing and formally partnering with elements of the ANA, including the ANA Commandos, the ANA Special Forces, the Afghan Local Police and several Police Special Tactics elements.
