Marsh assumes CSM responsibilities of The Legion

Fort Campbell, Ky. (USASOC News Service, March 14, 2014) – The Soldiers of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), also known as “The Legion,” welcomed a new command sergeant major during an assumption of responsibility ceremony at Fort Campbell, Ky., March 7.
Command Sgt. Maj. Lyle Marsh assumed responsibility as the 29th command sergeant major of the Special Forces Group during the traditional passing of the sword. The passing of the sword signifies the relinquishing of responsibility and authority from the outgoing to the incoming command sergeant major.
The razor sharp, single-edged blade is a direct reflection of the finely honed character and professionalism of the noncommissioned officer corps. The hilt on the sword is fashioned to protect the bearer’s hand in the same respect that the NCO is designed to protect the Soldier.
As the senior enlisted advisor to the Group commander, the command sergeant major is responsible for carrying out the policies and standards of performance, training, appearance, and conduct of the Soldiers and noncommissioned officers of this unique Special Forces unit.
After assuming the position of the Group’s 29th command sergeant major, Marsh took the time to speak about the Green Berets and Soldiers of 5th SFG (A) stating, “They are the finest our nation has to offer; they are the Soldiers of The Legion, and I relish every day that I am afforded the blessing of walking among them.”
Before Col. John Brennan, the 5th SFG (A) commander, welcomed Marsh to his new position he recognized the unwavering commitment and accomplishments of the previous senior non-commissioned officer of the unit, Command Sgt. Maj. Dwayne Cox.
“He is a true expert in his profession. He keeps himself mentally and physically fit at all times and he holds people accountable. He will definitely make sure you earn your paycheck every day.”
Marsh is not new to the Legion, having served in the unit for most of his career, including his last position as the 3rd Battalion, 5th SFG (A) command sergeant major.
