FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (USASOC News Service, July 16, 2014) – Soldiers with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), welcomed their new commander July 1, 2014.

During a ceremony held at Gabriel Field, Lt. Col. Lewis J. Powers relinquished command of the 3rd Bn., 5th SFG (A), to Lt. Col. Brent W. Lindeman.

“Under the command of Lt. Col. Powers, 3rd Battalion has successfully executed hundreds of missions of critical importance across the entire Middle East,” said Col. John W. Brennan, commander of the 5th SFG (A). “From combat operations in remote locations of Afghanistan, to critical advise and assist missions in Iraq, and other locations throughout the Central Command’s area of responsibility—3rd Battalion has always risen to the challenges before them and emerged victorious.”

Hailing from Keokuk, Iowa, Powers has held various assignments within the 5th SFG (A).

Following his selection and subsequent completion of the Special Forces Officer Qualification Course he was assigned to 2nd Bn., 5th SFG(A), where he commanded an operational detachment, he then moved on to command the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of 2nd Bn.

As a major, Powers held the position of executive officer for 4th Bn., then as Alpha Company commander, and following his tenure with 4th Bn., he served as executive officer of the 5th SFG (A).

“No stranger to the Legion, Brent [Lt. Col. Lindeman], like Jay [Lt. Col. Powers], has served in combat from detachment commander to company commander,” explained Brennan. “Now as 3rd Battalion Commander, those under his command will quickly see that Brent's soul is deeply rooted in mission accomplishment.”
