Colonel Robert C. McDowell Col. Robert C. McDowell is the Deputy Commanding Officer of the U.S. Army Special Operations Center of Excellence.
Col. McDowell is 1987 graduate of Ball State University. Upon entering the Army, he served as a platoon leader, aide-de-camp and assistant G3 in the Corps Artillery, deploying in support of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
In 1993, he completed the Special Forces Qualification Course, and has served as detachment commander, assistant operations officer, headquarters company commander, Special Forces company commander, battalion S3 and executive officer, group executive officer, battalion commander and group deputy commanding officer. His most recent assignment was as the Commander, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Lewis, Wash. While at 1st SFG(A), McDowell was dual hatted, serving as the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines Commander.
He has deployed to numerous countries on multiple combat, contingency and training operations including Haiti, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Korea, Australia, Afghanistan and the Philippines. He deployed to Afghanistan in Support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne)/Task Force Dagger initial-entry force and with the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne). Joint service includes duty at the U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., in the Joint Processes Division and as executive officer to the SOCOM J7 /J8. Assignments at the Special Warfare Center of Excellence include Director of Training and Doctrine and Deputy Commanding Officer at the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne).
His military education includes the Artillery Basic Course, the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Air War College.
Col. McDowell’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Special Forces and Ranger Tabs, the Combat and Expert Infantryman Badges and Master Parachutist Badge.
Col. McDowell is married to the former Samantha Lewis from Gallion, Alabama. They have one daughter, Leigh Ellen, a senior at Auburn University in Alabama.
