Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army Special Operations Center of Excellence
Command Sergeant Major Gilliand currently serves as the United States Army Special Operations Center of Excellence CSM. He assumed this position on 13 March 2013.
CSM Frank Gilliand was born in 1963 and entered the Army after graduating in 1981 from Seventy-First High School, Fayetteville, North Carolina. He reported to Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky in March of 1982 with later attendance at Fort Sam Houston, Texas for Advanced Individual Training. CSM Gilliand attended the Special Forces Medical Sergeant Qualification Course in 1985.
During the course of his career, CSM Gilliand has held duty positions to include Combat Medic, Medical Detachment NCOIC, Special Forces Senior Medical Sergeant, Special Forces Assistant Operations and Intelligence Sergeant, Special Forces Operations Sergeant, First Sergeant, Company Sergeant Major, Battalion Operations Sergeant Major, Battalion Command Sergeant Major, Special Warfare Group (Airborne) Command Sergeant Major, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines and Group Command Sergeant Major.
CSM Gilliand has deployed and conducted training or operations in countries throughout the Middle East and Asia. He has conducted combat deployments in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
CSM Gilliand’s military education includes Basic Airborne Course, Static Line Jumpmaster Course, Special Operations Medical Sergeant Course, Special Forces Operations and Intelligence Course, Combat Diver Qualification Course, Combat Diver Medical Technician Course, Combat Diver Supervisor Course, Military Freefall Course, Primary Leader Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course, First Sergeants Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Course, the National Defense University Keystone Course, Summit Course and Force Management Course. CSM Gilliand holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Excelsior College.
