Prior Service Accession Program
Former enlisted Special Forces Soldiers have an opportunity to rejoin the SF Regiment in an Active Duty status thru the Prior Service Accessions (PSA) program.
The PSA is open to CMF 18 qualified noncommissioned officers who previously served in the active component (AC) or the National Guard Component (NGC). Ideal candidates are those individuals who possess the attributes, experience and leadership skills critical to the SF mission. The Soldier must volunteer for Active Special Forces service. NGC Soldiers are required to obtain a conditional release from the National Guard Bureau prior to applying for AC service.
The United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (USAJFKSWCS) will screen, process and assign prior service volunteers into Special Forces. The policies and procedures are in coordination and concurrence with DA, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (ODCSPER), United States Army Human Resources Command (AHRC) and United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC).
All Special Forces qualified enlisted Soldiers not currently serving on AD in Special Forces require screening, assessment and revalidation prior to acceptance into AD SF. This includes prior service personnel, personnel currently serving in the NGC, and SF qualified personnel on AD who are not serving in a CMF 18 skill. This screening and revalidation is conducted at USAJFKSWCS at Fort Bragg. The PSA provides a fast track to refresh technical and tactical skills. Revalidation training focuses on MOS and language proficiency. CMF 18 Soldiers are not required to repeat Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS).
Volunteers are accessed onto AD under a conditional contract in accordance with USAREC policy. Conditions of their contract specify that, upon successful completion of an assessment and review board appearance, Soldiers will serve on AD in CMF 18. Soldiers who do not meet assessment prerequisites or board criteria are reclassified to another MOS as directed by AHRC IAW the needs of the Army and could be considered for reevaluation into SF after a period of 12 months. Assessment of the Soldier's military records to include performance evaluations, academic evaluations and administrative actions are conducted by the Commander, USAJFKSWCS and executed through a review board chaired by the CSM, USAJFKSWCS. Volunteers personally appear before the review board with complete application packets. PSAs are assigned to active duty Groups. An exception to this policy is at the discretion of the CSM, USAJFKSWCS.
From fiscal year 2008 to 2012, a total of 61 enlisted PSAs were evaluated and boarded. Of those, 57 where accepted and processed for AD service. The other 4 where reclassified to another MOS in the AD Army.
