The MEDCAP was conducted as part of Exercise Flintlock 11, U.S. Africa Command’s premier Special Operations Forces exercise, which began Feb. 21 and runs through March 11. During the Senegalese-led MEDCAP, U.S., European and African nation doctors and healthcare professionals provided medical care at a clinic which serves more than 40 small communities with limited access to healthcare. Marines from U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command served as advisors during the event and Special Forces from Mauritania and Spain gained valuable hands-on training and experience in how to conduct security during a MEDCAP. Members of the 91st CAB are serving as Special Operations Command Africa’s Civil Military Support Element. Flintlock is conducted by SOCAFRICA’s Joint Special Operations Task Force-Trans Sahara and is focused on military interoperability and capacity-building for U.S., Canadian, European partner nations and select units in northern and western Africa. Approximately 800 personnel are involved in this year’s exercise including participants from the U.S., Canada, Spain, France, The Netherlands and Germany, as well as from Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria and Senegal.
