Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army Special Operations Center of Excellence
Command Sgt. Maj. David Gibbs is currently serving as the 27th Command Sergeant Major of the United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, the Army Special Operation’s Center of Excellence.
Command Sgt. Maj. David Gibbs enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 1, 1984. He attended One-Station Unit Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment as a 13F, Fire Support Specialist, where he served as a forward observer and as a company and battalion-level fire support NCO until 1991. While assigned to 3/75, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs participated in the airborne operation to secure Rio Hato, Panama during Operation Just Cause.
In March of 1991, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs completed Drill Sergeant School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to Fort Sill, where he served as a drill sergeant until 1993. Upon completion of drill sergeant duty in March of 1993, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs was assigned to the Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In April 1994, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs was assigned to Co. A, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (A), at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. While assigned to 5th SFG (A), he served on a Military Free Fall detachment as the senior weapons sergeant and also as the assistant operations and intelligence sergeant until April 1998.
From 1998 until 2012, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs served in various elements as a team sergeant, company sergeant major, battalion command sergeant major, brigade operations sergeant major and as a brigade-level command sergeant major. During this period, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs deployed operationally numerous times, including to Operation Iraqi Freedom I, where he participated in Operation Viking Hammer and twice as the senior enlisted advisor of an operational task force.
From June 2012-May 2015, Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs served as the senior enlisted leader for Special Operations Command Africa, headquartered at Kelley Barracks near Stuttgart, Germany. Since July 2015, he served as the operations sergeant major for the Deputy Chief of Staff, G3 United States Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg.
His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Badge and the Master Parachutist Badge.
Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs holds a bachelor of science from Excelsior College.
